About this Event
Welcome to the Winter Walking Challenge!
This challenge aims to get you, your friends and family outside for January to top up your vitamin D, raise your spirits and elevate your heart rate in a gentle and enjoyable way.
What's the Challenge?
The goal is simple: commit to getting outside every day of January to boost your fitness and mental wellbeing through walking. Each week, you'll increase your steps, add some hills, and work towards completing an 11km group walk on February 1st. To help you along the way, the BARI team will be leading weekly training walks, and we’ve teamed up with the amazing Dave Hoyland, founder of Fitness Formula Gym and Revive Wellness Centre in Poole, to offer training tips, nutrition advice, and coaching techniques.
This challenge is open to everyone—all ages, fitness levels, and well-behaved dogs are welcome! 🐕😊
The Benefits of Walking in Winter:
Walking in winter has incredible health benefits, from boosting cardiovascular fitness and maintaining a healthy weight, to reducing stress and anxiety. But perhaps most importantly, it's about connection—connecting with yourself, the people you walk with, and the beautiful nature around us.
There’s growing evidence that connecting with nature helps calm the mind and relax the body so we’ll also be sharing our knowledge of the incredible wildlife and their habitats here in the Harbour, from well-known spots like Arne and Studland, to hidden gems like Hamworthy, Baiter, and Turlin Moor.
Your Commitment:
- Walk every day in January – whether it’s a brisk 15-minute lunchtime walk or a full hike!
- Increase your steps each week, adding distance and tackling some hills.
- Be fit enough to complete the 11km walk on February 1st with the group.
Our final challenge will start from the National Trust café at Knoll beach, and our lovely friends at National Trust will be giving a free hot drink and piece of cake to tickets holders that complete the challenge*!
Join the Facebook group Poole Winter Walking Challenge a community space for cheering one another on. We’re also hosting three training walks which we'll post on the group, starting easy and increasing in length and difficulty, to help you get ready for the final challenge.
