As tree lovers we can be quick to plant tiny trees water them when it’s dry cover them when it’s cold and hope for the best. Did you know it’s also good practice to prune small trees and shrubs for structural success during the first decade? Structural pruning results in trees better able to handle stresses such as ice snow and wind storms. With careful consideration you can remove conditions that increase risk of failure and reduce costly problems as they mature.
Join us on Sunday February 9th from 12-2pm for a hands-on workshop focused on essential techniques for winter pruning of deciduous trees and shrubs. During this outdoor session you'll learn how to identify proper cutting locations understand branch structure and make clean cuts that promote healthy growth. This event is being hosted by Lauren Frederick a dedicated Heritage Acres volunteer with many years of horticulture experience. While pruning tools will be provided you're welcome to bring your own clean sharp pruners or loppers if you'd like guidance on using your personal equipment.
Safety note: Since this event is entirely outdoors please dress for the cold with appropriate clothing and footwear and bring your own drinking water. Pre-registration is not required but encouraged. There is a sliding scale tax-deductible donation to Heritage Acres which helps fund our burial ground's operating costs and allows us to continue to put on new programming for the public. Please send an email to [email protected] if you'd like to register or have any questions. If you've not visited with us before please follow the directions on the website as GPS maps tend to send visitors down the wrong driveway: https://www.heritageacresmemorial.org/visits/#directions
