This mystical time of the Winter Solstice is a still point between the breathing in and breathing out of the Great Mother; that is the point where the Father God may enter as the new, the youngest, impulse of renewal and regeneration. As the earth becomes colder and darker, the sun sinks lower in the sky and all life slows down. The primal Mother Goddess rules the land and she takes life forces down into her earth womb to rest before the transformation that comes with the quickening. The sap in the trees and the energy of the plants is drawn into the roots; it appears that much of the plant kingdom has died, even the animals are less visible and some have gone into hibernation. Birds migrate and others arrive from even colder lands, the earth appears barren as all living creatures seek warmth and shelter. In her aspect of Crone or Cailleach, the Great Mother brings cold winds to strip the trees and frosts and ice to cleanse the earth.
Since the Summer Solstice the Great
Mother Goddess has been breathing in, now at the still point between the in breath and the out breath the God may enter and the quickening occurs.
In the greatest darkness the new sun is born and the sun God begins his rise to ascendancy once more.
The Great Mother Goddess breaths out and life slowly begins to stir in the earth.
This will be an outdoor ceremony, weather permitting.
