A round-robin event in which Scouts learn and compete in winter skills using the patrol method. Stations include Fire Building, First Aid, Knots and Lashings, Nature Identification, Orienteering, Scavenger Hunt, and more. We'll conclude the day with the great Klondike Derby Sled Race!
This event is open to 5th grade Arrow of Lights, all Scouts BSA and Venturing youth, and their respective leaders and parents.
Participants should each pack a bag lunch and bring a can of soup to contribute to stone soup (no cream-of soups, no tomato-based soups, please). Coffee, hot chocolate, and water will be provided during the day. Please bring your own reusable bowl and spoon for stone soup and cup or thermos for hot beverages.
Each Scout or Scout Patrol should have: 100 feet of rope or polychord for lashings, compass, fire building supplies-no firewood please, just tinder, kindling, and a source of ignition, first aid supplies (to Be Prepared! and for use in skill events), reuseable mug for hot chocolate or coffee, sled, staves (6, sticks or hiking staves 5-6 feet in length), and a tarp.
Note: groups of more than 10 will be split into smaller patrols. Please bring adequate supplies.
Sled Race Rules:
Each team must have a sled capable of holding one rider. A team must include one musher, one rider and no more than three (3) "dogs" (Scouts). All mushers, riders, dogs, and sled
must cross the finish line before your time is counted. Continue running past the finish line to allow teams behind you room to finish the race. Scouts may bring alternate footwear to use during the afternoon sled race. Scouts should arrive in the morning wearing socks and boots appropriate to the weather.
Be Prepared for winter weather. Dress warmly and in layers. The First Aid Station is located inside the heated pavilion.
Put on by Voyageur District, Bay-Lakes Council
