Kevin Russell was born in Beaumont, Tx raised between the borders of Texas and Louisiana. Russell learned guitar at the age 14 specifically to become a songwriter.
By 17 he was playing in the bars of Louisiana with his first band Picket Line Coyotes. They independently released one vinyl album in 1987, Fashion Dogs. And two cassette only releases, Upholstery Van Songs, and We Shall Annex The Sudetenland.
A brief stint in lower Greenville and deep Ellum of Dallas in 1989-90 convinced him he needed to move to Austin in 1991.
There the Coyotes disbanded. Russell wandered the wilderness until 1994 when he emerged quietly with a band called, The Gourds. Born from the ashes of PLC they combined old timey stringed instruments with contemporary roots music styles. Russell had wanted for years to write songs that transcended formulaic song and shallow lyrical content. A lover of juxtaposition and incongruity he experimented with dada, nonsensical, surrealist, stream-of-consciousness poetry set to traditional folk song structures.
The Gourds made their mark and helped advance the emerging Americana sound, garnering a song of the year nomination for Country Love. They ended their famous run in 2013 after 19 years on the road. Then 46, Russell decided to reinvent himself as a thing called Shinyribs.
According to Kevin, he got the nickname from off-shore welder’s chrome bicycle adornments as a kid.
Over the last 10 years Shinyribs has steadily evolved as a one-of-a-kind entertainment powerhouse traversing the nation year after year playing festivals and to sold out crowds. Releasing their 8th album, Transit Damage this year has seen the band rise nationally into a popular act known for their high energy, musically excellent shows.
We don’t know what the future holds for him. But rest assured music, poetry and dance will always be central to Russell’s creativity.
