We have some wonderful terms that Tai Chi Chuan and Qigong schools use to talk about inner and outer work. The inner and outer are not so much two separate places but poles that work together. Qigong has approaches that help guide one’s focus to be relatively external or relatively internal to activate change in the mind and body at different levels. At the heart of it, I prefer a Daoist approach to internal styles where the physical is never left behind to cultivate the mind/spirit without it. I’m going to introduce these two terms to use for our focus:
• Waidan - Alchemy which focuses on external methods
• Neidan - Alchemy which focuses on internal methods
In my Qigong classes, we are relatively external when we focus on the body movement of an exercise, how the postures should look, whereas we become more internal as we use interoception to search for tension lines in the body or the correct moment to be aware of an aspect of our alignment that is not visible but felt. We are even more internal when we feel energy gates open and close; or intentionally enhance energy lines using our attention alone; or make some subtle adjustment to our alignment using breath rather than external manipulation. We are most internal when we no longer regulate these last points and simply rest in a meditative state with our mind turned inwards.
Curriculum:
• We’ll learn and practice a Qigong set (Crystal Dragon) and some stance training (Embrace the Tree, Monk’s pose etc.) to get the energy moving much as we have done in previous sessions.
• Then we’ll use that enhanced sensitivity along with specific intentions and visualizations to guide additional Qigong movements and for focus in seated exercises. This will drive the results deeper into our bodies and minds.
• There are specific energy points I’ll direct you to.
• There are energy pathways sometimes called “vessels” that we’ll find and intentionally work with.
• Ultimately, we will seek a meditative state of mind to most directly influence the nervous system. We’ll spend some time with this goal using seated meditation.
The inner work is not easier than the outer work, although an audience would find much less to see.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
