From handwritten valentines and carefully supervised courtships to elaborate engagement customs and expectations of marriage, romance was both deeply emotional and highly structured. In this talk, we’ll uncover how Victorians expressed affection, navigated courtship, and celebrated Valentine’s Day in the 19th century.
