Practice winter pruning techniques at Sakaw Gardens in Edmonton. This hands-on workshop teaches you to prune fruit trees with proper tools and cuts. OFRE arborist Myrna Peters guides you through the process on real trees.
This workshop builds on Part 1 fundamentals. Part 1 is recommended but not required.
About Sakaw Gardens
Sakaw Gardens is a community garden project led by Millhurst Community League. Local gardener (and our arborist) Myrna Peters proposed the garden in 2020, and volunteers built it starting in 2021. The site includes raised garden beds, accessible paths, and a small public-use orchard with fruit trees and berry bushes. We'll practice pruning in the orchard area.
➜ What You'll Learn and Do
✔️ Inspect fruit trees: Identify which branches to prune for better health, structure, and fruit production
✔️ Make proper cuts: Use professional pruning tools to make clean cuts that heal well
✔️ Improve tree health: Learn how pruning affects airflow, sunlight, and long-term tree growth
➜ Your Instructor
Myrna Peters is OFRE's Secretary and an experienced arborist. She specializes in fruit tree care and pruning techniques for Edmonton's climate. Myrna teaches beginners and experienced gardeners how to prune with confidence.
Whether you're new to tree pruning or want to improve your technique, you'll leave with practical skills.
➜ Why Prune in Winter
Winter pruning reduces stress on trees and lowers disease risk. Dormant trees show their branch structure clearly, making it easier to see what needs removal. Proper pruning improves fruit yield and extends tree life.
This workshop helps you maintain backyard fruit trees, reduce food waste, and grow more food at home.
➜ Registration
Space is limited. Registration costs $25.
Note: Part 1 covers pruning basics and is recommended before attending Part 2.
