Homeschool students are invited to join Quiet Valley Staff and Volunteers for a Winter Camp at Quiet Valley. Each day will have two classes, one for grades 1-4 and one for grades 5-8. Be sure to bundle up, as we will be spending some part of each day on the farm. The cost of camp is $25 per day. Participants may register for all three days or individual days of camp. When you register for all 3 days, you'll save $5 per day.
Grades 1-4 Topics
February 14- Winter Animals-What do animals do in the winter? Join us as we explore the farm to look for signs of winter animals, learn about winter animal adaptations, and visit our farm animals!
Pottery
February 21- Hearth Cooking- Join us to learn how people cooked in the past. Try your hand at different cooking techniques used on our open hearth. We’ll learn about using what’s available and make seasonally appropriate dishes to sample.
February 28- Farm Hand Adventure- After learning how a farmstead was settled in the late 1700s, the students are taught the bread making process from yeast to rising dough. Each child kneads the dough, shapes it, and at the end of the day takes home a small loaf of freshly baked bread. They will also get to churn butter, process wheat and learn about PA
Dutch folk art and make their own art piece to take home. This is an active, hands-on way to learn about important farm products like wheat and milk.
Grades 5-8 Topics
February 14- Pottery
February 21- Needle Felting-In this hands-on needle felting class, students will learn the basics of this fun and creative craft, including how to safely use felting needles to shape wool into beautiful designs. Over the course of the afternoon, participants will create their own colorful needle-felted garland, exploring techniques to add texture, dimension, and vibrant details. Whether you're a beginner or looking to refine your skills, this class is a perfect way to express your creativity while making a unique, handmade piece of art!
February 28- Basketry- Learn about different types of traditional baskets and their uses. What types of materials did people use to make baskets? How were different baskets used around the farm? Then, create your own 6”x8”x5” gathering bast to take home!
