Learn how to ID winter birds and how to complete a winter bird survey at Lawrence Weston Moor
About this Event

Winter is a brilliant time to look for birds as the UK welcomes huge influxes of birds such as ducks, waders and thrushes!

During this late afternoon walk we will guide you through some the identification skills you need to name a range of wonderful winter bird species found around Bristol. You will discover how to contribute your sightings to ongoing bird surveys, help us improve the site for wildlife, and you can use your new skills to survey for birds in your local patch too!

What to expect:

• An introduction to some winter birds you might come across in Bristol

• Map out your findings using bird codes

• Find out where and how to record what you see so you can help guide conservation action

"Between Lawrence Weston and the M5 lies a little slice of history. Remnant countryside criss-crossed by rhines that are home to Bristol’s most endangered species, the water vole. Tune out of the roar of the motorway and you can forget all about the city, enjoying impressive old oak trees, ponds and if you’re lucky the sight of a snipe amongst the reeds."

  • The meeting point will be next to Lawrence Weston Social Club BS11 0ST. If using the what3words app the what three words location can be found by searching - home.rabble.polite
  • Free residential parking is available.
  • If you have them please bring binoculars (we'll also have a few pairs for you to borrow), sturdy waterproof footwear, weather appropriate clothing and a torch for the walk back if we need it.

Accessibility:

Most of this walk is off road, sometimes on uneven ground. We will adjust our speed to the slowest in the group and make sure we are all keeping up - you don’t need to be an experienced walker to take part. The route has some slopes and steps, some of the path is muddy and most of the route is unlit.
