We invite you to join us for a look into the fascinating life and career of iconic American artist Winslow Homer.

Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Winslow Homer is one of the most popular and important artists in American history. Following the Civil War the United States experienced increased industrialization and urbanization (the Gilded Age) yet Homer’s paintings captured the innocence of daily rural American life.

This is one of a series of educational and entertaining art history programs focusing on “the American Experience”, the history of the United States through the context of American art: painting, sculpture, photography, architecture, furniture, fashion, etc.

We’ll also periodically explore the relationship between American art history and a variety of other cultural mediums such as music, literature, dance, food, religion, economics, politics, sports, radio, television, film, plus much more!

Winslow Homer (February 24, 1836 - September 29, 1910) was an American landscape painter and illustrator, best known for his marine subjects. He is considered one of the foremost painters of 19th-century America and a preeminent figure in American art in general.

Largely self-taught, Homer began his career working as a commercial illustrator. He subsequently took up oil painting and produced major studio works characterized by the weight and density he exploited from the medium. He also worked extensively in watercolor, creating a fluid and prolific oeuvre, primarily chronicling his working vacations.
