International touring comedian, Vōng Shō, performs in his hometown of Winnipeg for the first time in his 20-year career. Vōng describes the production as his “love letter to Winnipeg” and explores his special connection with the city and how it shaped him and his career. This special performance will cover everything from his early childhood as a gay, visible minority coming of age in one of the most dangerous neighbourhoods in the heart of the “murder capital of Canada” to his realization later his life that journeying back to Winnipeg would be the best way to rediscover his true self. 'Vōng Shō: The Chosen One' is a special presentation in collaboration with the organizers of the Winnipeg Comedy Festival and will be staged at the iconic and newly renovated Gas Station Arts Centre. The performance will be taped for later release as a comedy special on streaming platforms.
Vōng’s love of Winnipeg is grounded in his admiration for the people of Winnipeg and their unique voices. As such, the show will open with his favourite local, undiscovered talents including Dewey Parker, Jeff Gobeil, and Shy Sapp.
Vōng Shō is the founder of Comedy Cares, connecting comedians and charities to raise funds for worthy causes, and creator of the hugely successful RICE: Asian Comedy Showcase. He has appeared nationally on CBC (The National, Radio One, CBC Toronto), CTV (The Social), OutTV (Out For Laughs), and internationally on American MTV Networks (One Night Stand Up). Vong has served Chair of the JUNOs Comedy Album of the Year for the past four years.
