WINNING AT WRITING - NAILING THE NARRATIVE (PRIMARY)

This workshop will take you through an evidenced daily writing program that will enable your students to succeed at writing.
The program uses explicit teaching techniques and focuses on text structure, writing techniques, paragraphs, vocabulary, sentence structure and audience. This program is highly successful with students who find organising their thoughts and writing very difficult, as well as highly successful writers.
Do you have students in your class who, despite all your best efforts, keep writing narratives (and any other form of writing!) that just go on and on and on, with little structure or organisation? Are your evenings and weekends filled with the drudge of marking boring stories? Are you looking for answers?
We can assure you that you are not alone. Teachers are telling us that it is a really complex task to get students to pull together everything that is required to write a narrative, and we wholeheartedly agree. We found ourselves in this very same position with students who had fabulous ideas but once they started writing, it became stilted and all their ideas were lost. We wanted to get it right for our students. As a result of our struggles, we developed this ten week daily narrative writing plan, we called The Daily Dash. It proved to be not only very popular with our students and with many other teachers we worked with, but we also saw results we could not believe.
We want to share this program with you.
This program, The Daily Dash, will address all of your concerns and more. It will support your students who are struggling with all aspects of writing and also extend those students who really need to refine and hone their skills. The Daily Dash is explicitly taught every day for ten minutes. Each session is carefully planned for you, with all the resources you need to develop writers who have control over all aspects of the narrative text type.
During this course we will examine the program in great detail and demonstrate how to implement it into your classroom effectively. We will also show you how you can use this model with all the other text types you need to address with your class.
If you are preparing students for NAPLAN we know this is the program, not only for you, but for your students too.
In this workshop you will:
- Review the stages of writing development and the key features each stage
- Examine the Daily Dash program and develop an understanding of how and why it is successful with students
- Understand how to implement the Daily Dash within your class, across a year level or the whole school
- Examine ways to review and measure outcomes of the program
- Discuss ways that the program can be adapted to meet the demands of other text types in the curriculum
Not only that, you will also
- Discuss the range of challenges faced by students with specific learning disabilities (dyslexia and dysgraphia) and examine how the program will support their learning needs and individual plans.
- Meet and network with other colleagues and discuss and share professional knowledge and expertise.
This workshop is designed for primary school teachers and leaders who work with students in Year Three and above. Course materials and content have been developed with this audience in mind. Colleagues from other sectors are welcome to attend this course if they want to develop a skill set in a different context.
ALL WORKSHOPS INCLUDE:
- Lunch and refreshments
- All associated notes and resources including The Daily Dash program
- Certificate of Learning identifying hours of learning and AITSL standards addressed
