Join artist Jia Sung for an afternoon of crafting and sharing at Think!Chinatown's Studio (1 Pike St). Together we’ll explore basic embroidery techniques, look at some examples from history as well as Jia’s own work, and learn about its storytelling history and decorative uses. During the craft circle portion of the workshop, participants are invited to bring their favorite photos from their family archives, and share about the stories behind them.
This series of community embroidery workshops is part of Think!Chinatown’s upcoming exhibition, Winged Seeds. Participants will gather to create embroidery pieces which will then be used as part of the frames for the exhibition’s collaborative portraits by Jia Sung. Participants’ archival family photos may also be submitted for consideration to be the subject of Jia’s exhibition portraits.
No prior embroidery experience required. RSVP required - limited space available.

Important: Embroidery pieces created during this workshop will be used for the Winged Seeds Exhibition. If you’d like to continue working on your piece, you can continue to work on it at home but we ask that you return it within two weeks during open studio hours!
is an upcoming Think!Chinatown exhibition featuring artwork by Jia Sung. Opening in May 2025, Winged Seeds will explore the artist’s interests in diasporic narratives, family archive, and interspecies kinship, to uplift and reframe the ancestral stories of Manhattan’s Chinatown.
Jia Sung is a Singaporean Chinese artist and educator whose practice spans painting, artist books, textiles, printmaking, and translation. She is the author of Trickster’s Journey, a tarot deck published with Running Press. @jiazilla /
