The Wind River Wild Horse Public Off-Range Pasture, in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management, will host a free public event and wild horse adoption on September 6! The Wind River Ranch is located seven miles north of Lander.Approximately 20 untrained horses will be available for adoption on a first come, first-served basis, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Untrained burros may be available. Free tours to see the resident herd of wild horses will also be offered.
Wild horse public off-range pastures help the BLM care for excess wild horses that have been removed from overpopulated herds roaming Western public rangelands. They provide opportunities for people to learn more about the complexities of the wild horse and burro program, and to experience a piece of our shared American heritage.
The Wind River Ranch is located at 8616 U.S. Hwy. 287. It offers tours to see the horses and other educational opportunities from May through September each year. Visit Wind River Ranch to learn more about this public pasture.
Getting there: Take U.S. Highway 287 north from Lander 7.5 miles toward Ft. Washakie. The Visitor Center driveway is the first entrance on your right after Plunkett Road.
