About this Event

Shokei hopes to create Noh masks that exude human drama, like Hokusai Katsushika's works.

In the 1998 issue of the American magazine LIFE, Hokusai Katsushika was the only Japanese person to be selected as one of the "100 people who have made great achievements in the last 1000 years." Why was the value of Hokusai Katsushika's work recognized by so many artists, including Van Gogh, Picasso, and Debussy, after his death?

Shokei’s continuous study and creation would reach the answer someday, where such efforts could become a trail for someone, and the name of this underrated Noh master could hopefully be well known like Hokusai, as his activity could go on.

Our daily life is filled with joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness, bringing tears and laughter passing by in seconds, and minutes.

Noh plays portray dramas on stage, of such human's emotions which are especially condensed essentially in the facial expression. Noh was perfected by father Kan'ami and the son Zeami in the 14th century, and their spirits last for centuries to the present day based on therefore the most significant element in our lives.

A Noh mask must remind viewers of human drama. Shokei devotes himself to making Noh masks every day for about 40 years, with the earnest desire to create masks that evoke the dramas that appear in Japanese classical literature such as the Tale of Genji and the Tales of Ise. Through all his enthusiastic pursuit, Shokei hopes his works imbued with his philosophy and way of life would lead as many people's attention around the world as possible to this vanishing culture from Japan.

Shokei will perform a lecture essentially focused on such topics, based on his cultural philosophy through his work collections. Please come up to the 5th floor [Kosaka Center]!
