What is the Wimbledon Guild Waggy Walk?

On Saturday 2 October 2021, Merton based charity Wimbledon Guild is holding a family dog walk on Wimbledon Common to help raise money for local people in Merton who are experiencing social isolation and loneliness.

The event is open to everyone, with and without dogs.

Starting at the Hand in Hand pub on Wimbledon Common, there will be a 4km or a 7km picturesque walk to choose from.

Everyone who completes the event will receive a goody bag from luxury pet shop, Pet Pavilion.

When you check in on the day, there will complimentary drinks and treats inside the Hand in Hand.

After the walk you will be offered post-walk refreshments (including a vegetarian option).

After the walk local estate agent John D Wood will be there giving out goodies for your 4 legged friends.

Many thanks to our kind sponsors Ashworths Solicitors, Pet Pavilion and John D Wood Estate Agents for their support.

Are there any entry requirements?

Walkers

Walkers must either be 16+ or accompanied by an adult. Walkers may bring a dog or dogs (up to 2 per walker) but this is not a requirement to take part.

The walk through Wimbledon Common will be reasonably strenuous (approx. 4km or 7km) and will include patches of uneven ground and inclines. You should be confident that you and your dog are physically able to complete the walk. Unfortunately the terrain is not suitable for mobility scooters or wheelchairs.

Dogs

We are looking forward to meeting our new four legged friends. Please can you ensure your dog:

  • Is well socialised and will not behave in an aggressive, intimidating or dangerous manner towards other dogs or any participants or members of the public
  • Is kept on a lead at all times
  • Is not permitted to disturb other users of Wimbledon Common
  • Is kept under control and taken to one side if a horse is approaching
  • Has a supply of dog-waste bags, their mess is picked up and disposed of in one of the dog-waste bins on site or else the dog mess is taken away and disposed of by the participant at their home
  •  Is tagged with the owner’s contact details on their collar (this is a legal requirement and we can reunite any lost dogs and their owners much more easily this way)
  • Has been microchipped (this is a legal requirement from April 2016)
  • Is up to date with vaccines and is not in season
  • Is transported to and from the Event safely and securely
  • Is not left unattended in a vehicle during the Event

Practical info about the walk

Walkers are responsible for their own safety and that of their children and animals when taking part in the walk.

We recommend you:

  • Bring sufficient water (and food if required) to get around the walk for both you and your dogs
  • Wear suitable clothing and footwear (taking into account the weather forecast)
  • Bring a mobile phone with full battery
  • Carry a route map and emergency contact details (these will be provided to you at check in)

Please do not bring any alcohol onto the route and please do not litter on the Common.
