Tuteurs: Decorative towers in the garden for vines to climb (image)
Willow has been used for centuries for building decorative towers in the garden for vines to climb, called tuteurs. In this class you will learn the techniques to make a 4 ft. tuteur that you can keep in the pot in which it will be built or put out in your garden. We will also discuss where to get willow for weaving and how to grow your own. You can take cuttings home for starting your own willow patch.
Instructor: Andrea Diss-Torrance has been weaving tuteurs, hurdles, fencing and occasionally baskets for more than 15 years. She has taught gardeners at Allen Centennial Garden and Olbrich Botanical Garden on building garden structures.
Be prepared: Participants should wear pants that can get very dirty. They will be bending willow over their knees and this will make pants extremely grimy. Or wear a canvas work apron if you have one.
