they’re bringing along Sheryl Crow, Wilco, Billy Strings, Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, the Avett Brothers, Lake Street Dive, Waxahatchee, Lucinda Williams, Bruce Hornsby & the Noisemakers, and more to join them at various stops along the way.
The 35-date tour kicks off in May with a stop at Jones Beach on Fri, Aug 1. “What an amazing lineup to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Outlaw Music Festival Tour,” Nelson said in a statement. “I can’t wait to join friends and family in bringing this celebration to the fans we love.” (The math is slightly fuzzy in regard to the “10th anniversary” — the first one was held in 2016.) Other artists on the rotating lineup include Turnpike Troubadours, the Red Clay Strays, Charles Wesley Godwin, Trampled by Turtles, the Mavericks, Sierra Hull, Willow Avalon, Waylon Payne, Madeline Edwards, Lily Meola, Myron Elkins, and Tami Neilson. Much like the 2024 incarnation of the Outlaw Festival Tour, Dylan and Nelson are the only acts to appear on every bill.
The original Outlaw Music Festival was a one-day event in Scranton, Pennsylvania, that featured Nelson, Neil Young and Promise of the Real, Sheryl Crow, Chris Robinson Brotherhood, and Lee Ann Womack. It transformed into a tour in 2017 where Nelson was joined throughout the summer by acts like My Morning Jacket, Van Morrison, Eric Church, Jason Isbell, and Dylan. The 2024 incarnation of the Outlaw Music Festival was the first time that Dylan signed on for the entire length of the tour. But Nelson was forced to miss several concerts due to health problems. Lukas Nelson stepped into his father’s shoes at those shows and played classics from throughout the family catalog. Dylan’s nightly set was a stark departure from his standard Rough and Rowdy Ways show of the previous few years. He dropped every song from the 2020 LP, and instead played surprise covers like Chuck Berry’s “Little Queenie” and Dewayne Blackwell’s “Mr. Blue” in addition to originals like “Ballad of a Thin Man,” “Shooting Star,” “Love Sick,” and “I’ll Be Your Baby Tonight.” He was joined at most stops by Nelson’s longtime harmonica player Mickey Raphael. “It was not a cakewalk,” Raphael told Dylan fan Ray Padgett on his Flagging Down the Double E’s newsletter. “Every night was a little bit of tension of me just wanting to please him. It wasn’t like I even focused on the audience. I’m playing it for him, basically. It could have just been he and I in a room. That’s all I focused on, what he was doing. It wasn’t like, ‘OK, here’s your solo. Go play every hot lick you know.’ It was dead-on focused, creating art in real time. There was no showoff time.”
