The Morrell family name is well known in the City and the University of York. John Bowes Morrell was one of the founding fathers of the University and his name is remembered York for his lifetime’s work in protecting the beautiful environment that we enjoy. Less well known, but equally important is the life of his son, William Bowes Morrell, 1913-1981, to whom we owe not only the continuation of the work of his father, but the expansion of York Conservation Trust that now owns much of York City Centre and many other buildings , the York Common Good Trust, that supports the people of York in a very wide range of activities and also the establishment of the Morrell Lectures and the Centre for Toleration at the University of York. A great man who had a career in Newspapers and publishing and Penguin books on the national stage, he never forgot his home city and he worked tirelessly to pass on and enhance the environment he loved. This lecture aims to make him as well known as he deserves to be by another generation of York people.
