About the Videographers

Matthew Scott

Matthew Scott is an American biologist specializing in developmental biology, genetics, and cancer biology, obtaining his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biology from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Scott discovered the Homeobox, a DNA sequence that encodes a protein segment common to many proteins that control animal development. At the University of Colorado, his laboratory group investigated genes that control the development of animals, particularly genes that have maintained their control functions through half a billion years of animal evolution. At Stanford, while exploring genes that control patterns of animal growth, his research group discovered the genetic cause of the most common human cancer, basal cell carcinoma.

Dr. Scott served as President of the Society for Developmental Biology, the Director of the Bio-X interdisciplinary programs at Stanford, and served on grant review panels for the American Cancer Society and the National Institutes of Health. In 2014 Dr. Scott became the tenth President of the Carnegie Institution for Science. After retiring from Carnegie in 2017, he is now Professor Emeritus of Developmental Biology at Stanford University.

Dr. Scott applies his expertise in photography, drone piloting, and videography to assist conservation organizations. He has worked in this volunteer capacity with the EcoMinga foundation that protects Ecuadorian cloud forests, the Cochamo Valley Organization that is protecting lands in northern Chilean Patagonia, the Big Sur Land Trust, and the Land Trust for Santa Cruz County.

Steve Mandel

Founder of Mandel Communication, Steve has years of experience working in the private sector and working with several NGOs and nonprofits on a global scale, training scientists and staff in communications skills and helping them learn how to structure messages on critical wildlife conservation issues.

Steve has been a life-long, citizen scientist and photographer specializing in robotic and remotely-controlled photographic instrumentation, scientific devices, conservation photography, and deep space astronomical imaging (many used by NASA for their website and publications).

In 2007, Steve began to study and use wildlife photography as a way of informing people about the rapid pace of habitat destruction globally and its disastrous effect on wildlife. In 2008, he established the Lions of Gir Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, to address the needs of the critically endangered Asiatic Lions of the Gir Forest in India.

Steve is an award-winning wildlife photographer, with his images appearing in the New York Times, Smithsonian Books, Reader's Digest, Forbes Magazine, Sky & Telescope Magazine, Wired Magazine, Astronomy Magazine, The Astrophysics Journal, and other publications. Six of his wildlife photographs were chosen for display in the Smithsonian Natural History Museum in Washington, DC, as part of the Nature’s Best Photography: Windland Rice Smith International competition. In 2009, Steve's image of Japanese Macaques, titled Snow Monkey Mother and Child, was used as the cover for the highly acclaimed book, Second Nature: The Inner Lives of Animals.

Currently, Steve serves on the Advisory Council to the Dean of Natural Sciences at UC Santa Cruz; is a mentor to UCSC astronomy and astrophysics grad students; on the Director’s Advisory Council for University of California Observatories; and is a Research Associate in the UC Santa Cruz Departments of Astronomy and Astrophysics and Marine Biology.

You can learn more about Steve's photography here and on his astronomical website here.

Considering becoming a Land Trust member?

Land Trust members know Santa Cruz County is where the wild things are! A donation to the Land Trust directly supports our work to improve wildlife connectivity, preserve and protect farmland, and build new trails that connect our community to Santa Cruz's wild spaces—and makes you a Land Trust member! Together, we are improving wildlife connectivity from the Santa Cruz Mountains to the Gabilan Range by protecting habitats and building wildlife crossings. We’re restoring flood-prone farmland back to wild wetland habitat. And we’re building trails that connect our community to Santa Cruz's wild spaces.

A gift of any size makes a difference! Let's work together to preserve our outdoor spaces for all wild things, big or small! Make a gift to support our county’s wild things.
