Learn all about these curious amphibians through an exciting presentation with a live salamander!
About this Event

Discover wildlife that calls Wisconsin's Northwoods home through Wildlife Wednesdays at Treehaven! Join us monthly for this FREE all-ages program series, and explore the natural history of each month's focus animal through interactive activities, guided walks, and/or specimen observation. From fur to feathers, woods to water, predator to prey, and more, experience the diversity of the animal world right outside our windows—and learn how you can help protect it!

Join guest presenter and salamander enthusiast Tracey Grimek to discover the world of salamanders! These curious amphibians can be found near wetlands across Wisconsin, and are beloved for their silly expressions and charming, leisurely demeanor. Through a visual presentation, Tracey will introduce you to salamander life history, Wisconsin species, folklore, and more. We'll discuss the importance of wetland habitats, how their disappearance threatens salamander survival, and what you can do to help salamanders thrive. You will even have the chance to observe a live tiger salamander (Ambystoma tigrinum), and learn how salamander keepers like Tracey care for them in captivity!

About the presenter: Tracey grew up in the Coulee region north of La Crosse, WI, enjoying the natural places and wildlife that the area supports. Her passion for learning about science and the natural world led her to obtain a B.S. in Microbiology from UW-La Crosse followed by a Ph.D. in Bacteriology from UW-Madison. She always felt at home in rural Wisconsin, especially canoeing, fishing, and camping on the beautiful rivers that flow through the Northwoods. She therefore went on to obtain a Pharm.D. from UW-Madison and became a pharmacist in Antigo to support her lifestyle and serve the rural community. She dedicates free time to volunteering at Raptor Education Group, Inc., and caring for several animals at home including four beautiful and entertaining tiger salamanders.

Meet at the main entrance (double doors with Treehaven sign). Doors will open at 4:20 PM, talk begins at 4:30 PM. This is a seated indoor presentation that will take place in the upper auditorium, Room 200. All ages welcome, but children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

Registration will remain open through the start of the event. Please reserve a spot for each attendee.
