Learn the art and science of interpreting wildlife tracks and signs. This three-part workshop is for both curious beginners to experienced naturalists who want to learn more and practice their skills. The classes will be spread over 3 months and include indoor and outside learning.THREE SESSION COURSE led by Audubon's wildlife tracking experts Tracey Hall & Marina Flannery.

ABOUT EACH SESSION:
PART 1️⃣: Introduction to Tracks and Signs
VIRTUAL Class; January 15, 2025; 7:00 – 9:00 pm.
Learn the basics of tracking local wildlife. Discover gaits and patterns, track and scat identification, as well as some of the telltale signs and clues that wildlife leave behind. There will be opportunities to practice your identification skills and ask questions. A homework assignment between sessions will ask that you take photos of tracks and signs, and practice observation and identification skills. A Zoom link will be sent to all registered participants.
PART 2️⃣: Tracking in the Field
Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge; February 8, 2025; 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. (If there is Inclement weather, the class will be rescheduled to February 15, 2025.)
Begin Indoors to review gaits, patterns, tracks and signs. Practice identification and observation skills and discuss homework assignments before venturing outside. On the trails, we will collectively look for tracks and signs. Practice identification using a step-by-step process combined with other resources. Interpretation areas will also be marked in advance for the group to assess. Three-hour workshop (one hour inside, two hours outside). Dress appropriately for the weather, bring snacks, water, and wear waterproof hiking boots. Easy to moderate hiking levels.
PART 3️⃣: Tracking in the Field
Powder Mill Ledges Wildlife Refuge; March 29, 2025; 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. (If there is Inclement weather, the class will be rescheduled to April 5, 2025.)
Seasonal changes will be discussed as well as wildlife activity and clues that might be detected as winter turns to spring. Additionally, we will delve into aging and event sequencing. We can apply natural history information to the stories that wildlife leaves around us, if we take the time to stop, look, and listen. Three-hour workshop (one hour inside, two hours outside). Dress appropriately for the weather, bring snacks, water, and wear waterproof hiking boots. Easy to moderate hiking levels.
