Experience the wonders of nature through the transformative power of photography as London's world-renowned exhibit makes its historic arrival in Mumbai with its 59th edition. Celebrate the finest in nature photography up close as the Natural History Museum’s (NHM) prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year (WPY) competition presents its 2023 winners at the Art House, NMACC. Each year, WPY hosts a touring gallery of award-winning and commended images, igniting a sense of exploration and commitment to protecting the natural world. Premiered at the Natural History Museum, London in October 2023, this captivating collection has journeyed across 4 continents, visited over 35 venues in 15 countries, and reached more than 2 million people in 16 languages. Spotlighting 100 finalists — including 6 from India — it displays the very best from a pool of nearly 50,000 entries from 95 countries. Bringing the best of the world to India, NMACC unveils this stunning and thought-provoking showcase, inviting all to a breathtaking visual journey. The exhibition harnesses the unique emotive power of photography to engage and inspire audiences with both wonder and woe. Featuring extraordinary species — from tiny insects to massive mammals — and capturing fascinating animal behaviours in the world's most remarkable habitats, it offers an unparalleled experience. The collection comes to life through a transformative space that enhances audience interaction, revealing striking perspectives from both emerging and seasoned talents worldwide. On one hand, barn owls thriving in an abandoned building near a busy road zooms into what urban wildlife is about. On the other, a vivid portrayal of a horseshoe crab brings ancient, endangered lives to the forefront, underscoring the urgent need for their preservation. This selection highlights the Indian winners, offering a captivating glimpse into the country’s wildlife. While Sriram Murali transports us to Tamil Nadu’s Anamalai Tiger Reserve, where he captures a forest aglow with fireflies, Vinodh Venugopal invites us into his garden to marvel at the iridescent colours of an orb weaver’s intricate web. Meanwhile, ten-year-old Vihaan Talya Vikas presents ‘The Wall of Wonder’, featuring an ornamental tree trunk spider seemingly entranced by a carved figure of Krishna. Raj Mohan and Nejib Ahmed shed light on the more troubling aspects of the situation. Mohan provides a bird's-eye view of the pollution affecting Pallikaranai Marsh in Chennai, while Ahmed seizes the turmoil that ensues when a tiger ventures from The Orang National Park in Assam into surrounding agricultural land. Among these outstanding portrayals, global wildlife also shines through an Indian viewpoint with Vishnu Gopal’s striking image of a tapir in a Brazilian rainforest. As the exhibition draws attention to the beauty, diversity and fragility of the natural world, it prompts reflection on how to advocate for the planet. Whether you are passionate about photography, wildlife (or both!), or are simply looking for an enriching way to spend your day, come immerse yourself in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year archive and get exclusive insights from the masters of the craft.
