The Playhouse's Artitude: Climate, Culture & Circularity project welcomes Aengus Kennedy of Nature North West for two interactive family sunday workshops that will bring you deep into the world of birds and bats! Most suitable for children aged 8+.
Session 1: Garden Birds
Join us from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Sunday 1st December to explore the world of garden birds. Together we will:
- Learn about the most common bird visitors to gardens in the North West.
- Look at how to take part in the Birdwatch Ireland survey that starts at the end of the month.
- Explore different types of bird feeders and hang some up around The Playhouse garden.
- Learn some ways we can help to keep garden birds safe over Winter and beyond.
Session 2: Bats & Other Mammals
Join us from 10.30am to 12.30pm on Sunday 8th December to explore the world of bats and other small garden mammals, like hedgehogs. Together we will:
- Learn about the most common garden mammals in the North West and how to spot whether they have been visiting you.
- Look at a bat box and learn how to install and maintain one for your garden.
- Help to build a logpile home for hedgehogs in The Playhouse garden so that you can replicate it at home.
- Learn some ways you can help to encourage mammals to your garden and keep them safe over Winter and beyond.
Important Information
- These workshops are most suitable for children aged 8+ and their adult parent or carer(s). Children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the workshop.
- The workshops will take place indoors and outdoors. The outdoor section of the workshop will take place in The Playhouse's garden. This space is unfortunately not fully physically accessible - if you are a wheelchair user or mobility aid user and would like to attend, please contact [email protected] for full information about the space and to make an informed decision about accessibility.
- Tea, coffee and juice will be available and you are welcome to bring your own snacks. We ask that you avoid nuts and nut based products.
About Nature North West
Aengus Kennedy has worked in the area of environmental education for the last 15 years, self-employed at NatureNorthWest for the last ten. With a previous background in outdoor pursuits followed by sales, Aengus attended college in UCC in 2012-2014, specializing in field ecology.
Aengus currently delivers contracts for An Taisce’s Green Schools program, is a member of the Heritage in Schools Scheme, delivers Leaving cert. river and ecology study programs for the ETB and delivers biodiversity workshops for many county councils in Ireland. Aengus has lead dozens of guided walks for adult groups in several different habitats. He delivers department of education approved teacher training courses annually and has a regular nature slot on Highland radio, a local radio station in Donegal.
Aengus has ten years experience delivering habitat studies, bird, bat and flora surveys and is a member of the Community Foundation Irelands directory of ecologists. In the recent years Aengus has written and delivered introduction to ecology and introduction to biodiversity courses for community and environmental groups. He is currently an environmental rep. for the PPN on the LCDC and LAG committee’s.
