Join Whatcom Land Trust for an immersive photography workshop hosted by local photographers Greg Green and Rich Bowers. Over the course of two days, you will have the opportunity to dive into the captivating world of photography while exploring the unique landscape of a Land Trust conserved property.

Format:
Day 1: Presentation
The workshop kicks off Friday May 17th at 5:30pm with a presentation at the Whatcom Land Trust Office. Greg and Rich unveil the workshop outline, accompanied by photographic examples showcasing the workshop’s goals. Topic covered will include:
- An introduction to the Whatcom Land Trust and 40 year conservation history, focusing on the properties to be visited.
- Unlocking creativity to discover photography subjects in unexpected places.
- Exploring patterns in nature, from repeating patterns to mesmerizing fractals.
- Mastering the use of leading lines to accentuate focal points.
- Embracing the artistry of water reflections inspired by impressionist painters.
- Delving into the world of macro and close-up photography.
- Understanding composition rules, including the effective use of negative space and whites.
Day 2: Field Day
Embark on a fun one-day field trip on Saturday, May 18th led by Rich and Greg to a few select Whatcom Land Trust properties. Immerse yourself in the beauty of Whatcom County as you capture stunning shots of water bodies, wildlife, plants, fungi, and natural patterns. Potential sites include Fenton Nature Reserve, California Creek Estuary, Point Whitehorn Marine Reserve, and/or Nesset Farm. Expect ample opportunities for photography while minimizing travel time.
We will conclude the field day by returning to Whatcom Land Trust’s office in the afternoon to participate in a constructive photo critique session led by Greg and Rich. You will review your images, edit if desired, and select your top five shots. Rich and Greg will upload your selected images to Lightroom and offer insightful feedback on ways to enhance both field techniques and post-processing skills.

Equipment Requirements:
Attendees are expected to have a basic understanding of their photography gear and preferably have a DSLR camera with various lens sizes. White this workshop will primarily cater to DSLR users, IPhone photographers are welcome to join and learn alongside the DSLR users.

Bios:
Greg Green: Gregory A. Green is a career wildlife biologist and instructor at Western Washington University where he teaches ecology, wildlife techniques, and natural history. He is also a nature photographer and writer and recently published the book Wild Lives with Art Wolfe highlighting the state of the world’s wildlife through photography and essays. His photography is also currently being featured in the Spring 2024 issue of Adventures Northwest Magazine.

Rich Bowers: Rich grew up in Pennsylvania and moved with his family to Bellingham in 2001. He has served both on the Board and as Executive Director for both American Whitewater and Whatcom Land Trust. Both of these organizations offered him ample opportunities to travel to beautiful and unique natural places and he always had his camera ready to go!
In addition to photography, Rich is an avid whitewater and ocean paddler, skier, and hiker. Rich retired as Executive Director of the Whatcom Land Trust in 2020 to devote more time and energy to his photography.
