Saturday 25 October and/or Saturday 8/Sunday 9 November 2025Wildling pine removal is back for SPRING 2025!
There are still plenty of areas that need pine tree culling left for us. However, most areas now need 4WD vehicles. Ray Goldring confirmed that cars equivalent to his (a pre 2000 Subaru Forester all wheel drive) are fine. These are gravel/metal roads so chipping is a possibility.
We will be carpooling (leaving Yaldhurst at 8 am, back around 5 pm) and each day is a full day (about 5 hours work) on hilly country. For those who have not done this before, loppers and tree saws are supplied; however if you own a folding tree saw feel free to bring it with you as they are usually more effective that the supplied saws. Drivers can choose to be reimbursed (see below) or not. Electric chainsaws are also appreciated!
Ray has offered us one area on the hillside opposite Lake Pearson, further towards Cass where parking is on the highway so city cars are fine. This is steep, scrub covered hillside with gnarly trees – we have already had 2 successful days here and it would be great to know forest and bird members (and friends) were the ones who cleared this hillside.
If you are interested, please reply with:
preferred day or days
contact details (email, phone number)
whether you are happy to take your car (& no. of people)
whether it is 4WD
knowledge or experience of first aid
to Joy Talbot at [email protected] or phone 03 9422917 (leave a clear message with your phone number if I don’t pick up). If we have enough people for the 8th & 9th November and appropriate vehicles, we will go both days (with different leaders), otherwise I will choose one of the days. I will assume, unless you specify you are happy to go both days, that volunteers available for both days will only go one of the days.
I will email everyone closer to the dates with more details about what to bring, wear, etc.
Canterbury F&B receives $30 per person so it is a good money earner for Forest & Bird as well as a great (but full) day out. WELRA pays F&B directly for each person and for the drivers ($80). Drivers can request to be reimbursed all or part of their contribution and are given information on how to do this. If you chose not to be reimbursed this money also goes to F&B.
4WD or high wheel base vehicles
Most remaining sites are in the back of Flock Hill Station, some bordering on DOC land. This is lightly grazed scrubby country. Access is by rough farm track and can be steep. If you are able to provide an appropriate vehicle so we can get into these areas in the future please also email me. If we do get enough vehicles Ray can allocate us more areas, which means more funds for north Canterbury Forest & Bird.
