Join us for a relaxing summer cruise and foraging tour to the peaceful island of Vartiosaari!The cruise will start at Hakaniemi, taking us along the Eastern Archipelago route to Vartiosaari. The island, located on the eastern shores of Helsinki between Laajsaalo and Vuosaari, has a beautiful nature trail and lookout cliff. The cruise takes a scenic route past Korkeasaari, Mustikkamaa and Laajasalo, and passes through the Degerö canal, a narrow tree-lined passage-way between Tammisalo and Laajasalo.
The 2-hour foraging walk will introduce us to the most common wild herbs, berries and plants from the Finnish coastline and rocky areas as well as meadows and forest on Vartiosaari. Biologist Anna Nyman will be our guide from Helsinki Wildfoods.
The foraging workshop will be held in English and includes:
• A beginner’s foraging walk to identify wild edible and medicinal plants
• Introducing the local ecology and nature around Helsinki
• Learning to identify and use the most common Finnish wild herbs & vegetables safely
• Learning about preserving plants - drying, blanching, and freezing
• Understanding everyman’s rights and the importance of sustainable foraging
• E-book about Finnish wild herbs, berries and vegetables (in English)
We will meet at 9:45 at Hakaniemi boat pier (Hakaniemen laituri) and take the 10:00 ferry from Hakaniemi to Vartiosaari. After the foraging walk, we will take the boat back to Hakaniemi, arriving at 13:45. The boat has a small café where you get drinks and refreshments.

Cost: €35 for Slow Food members, €50 for non-members. Fee includes foraging tour and return cruise (Hakaniemi-Vartiosaari).

The event is open to members, non-members, friends, and family!
Please note that the workshop is not suitable for prams or strollers or for very young children. Children aged 8-16 years can accompany their parents/guardians at no extra cost.
