Wildflower Photography Workshop with Mark Turner

You love flowers and you love taking pictures of them to share with friends and family. You’ve got a digital camera but aren’t quite sure how to use it. Buried in it are many features, but it can all be a little baffling until you figure out what you really need, what you can ignore, and what your camera’s strengths are. You might already know how to use your camera but aren’t confident in your ability to get great photos of the wildflowers you see when you’re out hiking. Join us for a Wildflower Photography Workshop led by renowned photographer and field guide author, Mark Turner, on July 26-27, 2024.
Friday, July 26, 2024:
Kick off the workshop with a slide lecture by Mark Turner from 7:00-8:30 pm at the Lightcatcher building (250 Flora St.). Discover techniques, lens choices, composition approaches, and ethical field practices. Optional viewing of National Geographic’s The Greatest Wildlife Photographs and the Get the Shot exhibition in the lobby from 6:00-7:00 pm.
Saturday, July 27, 2024:
Meet at Whatcom Museum’s Old City Hall by 7:50 am to carpool to Heather Meadows or Artist Point, or meet directly at Bagley Lakes trailhead at 9:30 am. Spend the day hiking and photographing with Mark’s expert guidance on camera settings, composition, and lighting.
There are several trails in the Heather Meadows and Artist Point area and we’ll make the final decision about exactly where we’ll hike and photograph once the snow melts and we see what the conditions are. Choices include the paved trail around Picture Lake, Bagley Lakes (about 2 miles round trip), and the Chain Lakes trail from Artist Point as far as Iceberg Lake (about 4 miles round trip). We’ll be hiking slowly and stopping where the flowers are looking good. Bagley Lakes or Chain Lakes are the most likely destinations and usually have the best/most flowers.
During your field time Mark will work with each student individually after demonstrating some of his favorite tricks and techniques.
You’ll get the most out of the class if you have a digital camera that has aperture-priority auto exposure or full manual control but any camera is welcome, including cellphone cameras.
**What camera gear to bring for the Saturday field session:**
- Digital camera. The focus of this course is on working with digital cameras—either a DSLR or mirrorless. However, you are welcome to bring and use your pocket digital camera or cellphone camera.
- Camera manual. There may be features of your camera that you weren’t aware of, or that you’ve forgotten how to use. Having the manual handy is very helpful.
- Extra batteries and battery charger for your camera.
- Extra memory cards for your camera.
- Tripod. Optional. A tripod is a composition tool as well as a way to hold your camera steady. But many people don’t bother with one, especially with cellphone cameras.
- Light modifiers (diffuser and reflector) if you have them, but don’t go buy one just for this workshop.

**Personal gear to bring for the Saturday field session:**
- Clothing appropriate for the weather and spending the day outdoors.
- Sunscreen and insect repellant
- Water (at least one 1-liter bottle and preferably two)
- We’ll be eating lunch somewhere on the trail.
- NW Forest Pass for parking at Heather Meadows
Don’t miss this chance to enhance your photography skills and enjoy a beautiful day in nature!
