Attention Outdoor Enthusiasts: Join the Sierra Club's Wilderness Travel Course (WTC)!
The Wilderness Travel Course (WTC) runs for ten weeks and includes four field trips - two one-day outings and two weekend adventures. Throughout the course, you'll learn essential skills such as map and compass navigation for off-trail hiking, snow travel, rock scrambling techniques, first aid, nutrition, and much more. The course culminates in unforgettable summer backpacking trips, helping you transition from a day hiker to a more serious adventurer.
WTC equips you with skills in trip planning, preparation, equipment selection, and wilderness safety, enabling you to explore the backcountry in all seasons. You'll forge connections with fellow outdoor enthusiasts who share your passion for nature.
Classes are held annually in around Los Angeles: San Gabriel Valley, West LA, Long Beach/South Bay, and Orange County, starting in January 2025. Registration is now open at .

The WTC is offered only in winter to prepare you for snow conditions often encountered in the High Sierra during summer. We accept approximately 300 students annually, with group sizes of 18-22, led by two group leaders and over ten instructors.
