This class occurs 100% outside. The bulk of instruction will occur around a fire ring under shelter and additional components will include short excursions to local natural areas to practice in more authentic settings. This weekend workshop covers a 5 part series we typically deliver over 5 weeks. We will cover fundamental outdoor skills similar to workshops we have run in the past and will go into more depth. The sequence of the sessions builds upon itself and skills learned in earlier sessions will be applied in later sessions. Week 1 is Knife and tool use. Week 2 is cordage, lashing and knots. Week 3 is Fire. Week 4 is Shelter and Week 5 is Navigation. Upon completion students will have significantly elevated competence and confidence. The main course designer and instructor is Daniel Coyle who has over 20 years experience teaching outdoor skills and is committed to student success. All tools and gear necessary for each session is provided (knives, compasses, fire tools etc.) and students are welcome to bring their own in order to become comfortable/familiar with personal gear. There will be time for discussion about particular scenarios and general approach to outdoor travel and camping. For those travelling from out of town free camping and bathroom access is available on site. Bring appropriate clothing to be outdoors and bring lunch/food.
