The Ozark Folk Center State Park will host its annual Wild Herbal Field Trip & Medicinal Plant Symposium for students, practitioners and teachers of the herbal arts on October 18 & 19.
Proudly sponsored by the Herb Society of America – Ozark Unit and the Committee of One Hundred for the Ozark Folk Center.
On Saturday, October 18 the symposium will include talks, demonstrations, and workshops covering uses and conservation of plants and trees, a deep study of the native herb, sumac, celestial herb gardening, and autumn herbal home activities.
The all-day Medicinal Plant Symposium begins at the park’s Skillet Restaurant for breakfast on your own from 8 a.m. to 8:45 a.m. and then moves to the White Oak Theater inside the Ozark Folk Center’s Visitor Center at 9 a.m.:
• 9:00-9:15: Welcome Announcements with OFC Gardener & Herbalist, Tina Marie Wilcox
• 9:15-10:00: The Fruits and Nuts of Fall!— Naturalist, forager and primitive skills teacher, Bo Brown
• 10:15-11:15: Celestial Gardening —2020 Organic Farmer of the Year, home remedies specialist, and garden designer, Jane Hawley Stevens
• 11:15-12:00: Most Useful Trees—Naturalist, Botanist, Researcher, and Forest Technician for the US Forest Service, John Michael Kelley
• 12:00-1:30: Lunch on your own at the Skillet Restaurant
• 1:30-2:30: Sumac Studies— Author, photographer and culinary artist Susan Belsinger
• 2:30-2:45: Break – Explore the Craft Village & Heritage Herb Garden
• 2:45-3:45: Four Elements Herbals Crops, Production of Products, and Conservation —Organic farmer, home remedies specialist, and garden designer, Jane Hawley Stevens
• 3:45-4:45 From Tornado to Forest Garden: A Journey of Healing & Renewal— Herbalist, healer, and regional authority on wild plants and herbs of the Ozarks, Sasha Daucus
On Sunday, October 19, a Wild Herbal Hike will be led by guest teachers, park staff, and members of the Herb Society of America – Ozark Unit into the Ozark Folk Center’s Heritage Herb Garden and nearby Whitewater Creek Trail. A walking stick, hiking boots or shoes and weather-appropriate apparel are suggested.
