Hi all, This is a casual free community event to help raise awareness about the abundant, nutritionally dense and medicinal plants that are growing where folks often don't want them, which has earned them the name "weeds".
We'll start at Burton's reserve and walk along esplanade road, learning to correctly identify wild edibles on the way, with a bit of nutritional and medicinal information. It will be up to individuals if they want to taste the plants pointed out as I don't know how often council sprays the area but most of the plants are likely already growing in your backyard which is generally the safest place to forage 🌿
We'll then head to a private garden on the way back to Burton's reserve and gather some weeds to make some "Horta" a traditional Greek dish back at the picnic area at Burton's reserve and talk about some other recipe ideas to give folks inspiration of different ways that wild edibles can be incorporated into our diets.
I personally find foraging for and eating wild edibles a great way to connect with our local ecology, make new plant friends, add nutrient density to our diet and utilize resources that are normally considered waste or generally ignored.
So please come along if you're keen to learn more! 😊
