A FREE festival in the heart of Wigan - a celebration of the life, ideas and influence of Wigan born Gerrard Winstanley - best summed up in his often quoted "The Earth was made a common treasury for all"The event runs from 11.00am with a parade and a symbolic re-enactment of the occupation of St George's Hill where The original Diggers looked to establish a self supporting community of sharing the benefits of both their efforts and the land on which they took place. Obviously not a popular idea with the powers that be - eitehr at the time, or sadly still being resisted today!
The remainder of the day offers music on 2 alternating stages - with a fabulously varied line up - there's folk, rock, folk-rock, indie, punk, singer songwriters, classic rock, along with ska/reggae from local, regional and national artists. In between, there's poetry and a presentation.
There's special Diggers Beer on site that helps finance the festival - so drink responsibly and lots of stalls offering a range of ideas and causes that seek your interest and support.
All rounded off by Merry Hell - returning for a hometown gig and the chance to meet up with so many friends and family.
All held in Believe Square - be there!!
