For February, A Wider Angle, our monthly foreign and independent film series, will screen the 2020 film FEAR, directed by Ivaylo Hristov, which was the official entry from Bulgaria for Best International Feature Film at the 94th Academy Awards (2022).Shot in moody black and white, the film focuses on the unlikely relationship between Svetla, a widowed, unemployed teacher in a small village close to the Turkish border, and Bamba, an African migrant whom she meets while amateurishly hunting rabbits in the forest near her home. Overcoming their cultural and language differences, the two form a bond of friendship edging towards romance, sparking an initial curiosity among Svetla's neighbors that foments into a fiery mob mentality stoked by the irrational fear that gives the film its English title.
In English and Bulgarian with English subtitles. (Running time 100 minutes)
