When Irma Herrera gives her name its correct Spanish pronunciation, she is often asked, "Where are you really from?" This reflects the belief that those who are identifiably 'ethnic' are too often considered NOT real Americans. Over the past four decades, Irma has dedicated herself to social justice activism, law, and journalism.

In this piece, Irma portrays 20+ characters, including herself at different ages, her parents, teachers — from a parochial school nun to a University of Notre Dame Law School professor — as well as classmates, colleagues, and opposing counsel she has encountered throughout her career. These characters collectively illustrate how names can serve as minefields of misplaced notions, sometimes comical, sad, or demeaning, and which speak volumes about where we stand as a diverse and highly divided nation.
