About this Event
In the recent decade, Holocaust studies have turned to exploring history of sexuality, especially among Holocaust victims. The experience of sexual violence has slowly arrived into the focus of scholarly and popular attention alike. But the topic remains a minefield. Topics such as queer desire, sexual barter, trans histories, or male male sexual violence can easily been interpreted as inappropriate or "woke." What are the intellectual gains of writing a history of stigmatized sexuality in the Holocaust, and what is the role of the historian?
Dr Anna Hájková is associate professor at the University of Warwick. Her first monograph, The Last Ghetto: An Everyday History of Theresienstadt, was published 2020 with Oxford University Press to academic and popular acclaim. She is a pioneer of queer Holocaust history, and edited a special issue "Holocaust, Sexuality, Stigma" of the journal German History. She regularly writes for mass media in the US, Germany, Czech Republic, and Israel.
