Join TV presenter, author and all-round dinosaur expert Prof Ben Garrod as he explains why dinosaurs went extinct and what we can do to save endangered species. An interactive talk for ages 7+ at the Sheldonian Theatre, introduced by Science Oxford’s Bridget Holligan for the Oxford Literary Festival.
What causes extinction? Why do some species go extinct and what can we do to save endangered species? Ben Garrod explores how extinction is one of the most complex, interesting and evolving topics. He explores what happened to the world’s first super-predator, why one of the most successful animals of all time went extinct, and how the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex was killed by a huge asteroid.
Garrod is professor of evolutionary biology and science engagement at the University of East Anglia. He started broadcasting in 2014 with the award-winning BBC4 series Secrets of Bones. Since then, he has presented a range of television programmes and series, including Attenborough and the Giant Dinosaur, The Day the Dinosaurs Died, Hyper-evolution: the Rise of Robots, Secrets of Skin and Baby Chimp Rescue. He is author of the children’s books series, ‘So You Think You Know About’ and ‘Extinct’.
Bridget Holligan is the Director of Education and Engagement for Science Oxford. Bridget began her career at The Exploratory science centre in Bristol as the presenter of live chemistry shows such as ‘Flash Bang Wallop!’ and ‘Bubble Magic’. After 25 years at Science Oxford, in 2020 Bridget was awarded the Beetlestone Award for her vision and leadership in recognition of the Science Oxford Centre and ‘Thinking, Doing, Talking Science’ – a national programme for primary science.
Oxford Literary Festival is back with a series of events this spring between Friday March 25 and Sunday April 3, 2022.
