About this Event

Join us for the second event in the "Why Arts Matter" research speaker series hosted by the College of Arts in partnership with the International Institute for Critical Studies and Improvisation (IICSI), exploring the intersection of disciplines to address individual experience, social life, and culture. This series highlights the importance of the arts in shaping our understanding of the world.

This panel explores how artistic, literary, and philosophical inquiry deepens our understanding of historical contexts and social transformations. Featuring Dr. Cathryn Spence, Dr. Rowen Bell, and Dr. Paul Barrett, the discussion connects economic life in early modern Europe, evolving conceptions of gender and identity, and the role of literature and technology in shaping cultural memory. Together, the panelists reveal how diverse forms of humanistic and artistic expression illuminate the moral, emotional, and material dimensions of the past, and how reinterpreting historical narratives helps us see the interplay between past and present more clearly.

This series will be video recorded for later distribution. Following the panel, audience members can engage in a Q&A session. This series will be video recorded for later distribution. Audience members will not be on camera, however will be asked to sign a release for their voice to be included in the recording if they choose to ask a question.
