RESCHEDULED FOR OCTOBER 2
Nancy A. Carter, president of the club, will speak on "Who Was Mary Magdalene? New Insights." Reservations are requested: email [email protected]
ABOUT THE TALK
Mary Magdalene was a major leader in the early movement of the followers of Jesus. A little-known fact is that her status exceeded that of Simon Peter among some groups of early Christians. As the centuries passed, her reputation was besmirched and her story obscured or destroyed. Though not the first man to do so, Pope Gregory I, in his influential Easter sermon of 591, labeled her a prostitute who had repented, an inaccurate description that has overshadowed depictions of her to this day.
This new century has ushered in official acts to repair Magdalene's image and new scholarly works that sought to restore her. For example, Pope Francis, in 2016, changed her memorial day into a feast day in the Roman Catholic church and elevated her to the same status as the apostles. He declared her "the apostle to the apostles." Also some (mostly women) scholars have discovered in historical documents and extant Greek and Coptic manuscripts and fragments some startling information that past scholars have overlooked or ignored. Among others, Elizabeth Schrader, Joan E. Young, Karen L. King, and Jane Schaberg have brought new insights into who Mary Magdalene was and the role of women in the early Jesus movement.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Nancy A. Carter began reading the Bible at a young age. When she received her first Bible at age 10, she decided on her own that she would memorize the entire Bible. She soon abandoned that idea!
She has written Bible study resources for lay people in The United Methodist Church including Jesus in the Gospel of Matthew: Who Do You Say That I Am? with contributions by Bishop Leontine Kelly (1993).
Nancy worked for The United Methodist Church all of her life in various capacities related to communications for the General Board of Global Ministries and as ordained clergy at local church level.
She retired and moved to Ticonderoga in 2009. She is president of the Adirondack Torch Club. She enjoys bird watching, photography, gardening, and genealogy. Some day she will finish her novel inspired by the Acts of Thecla and Paul.
