A talk with Alison Menzies
Not many towns can boast a 500 year old portrait of themselves. Newcastle is one of the privileged few. A fascinating “bird’s eye view” of the sixteenth century town, now held by the British Library, irresistibly invites the eye to trace the lineaments of today’s townscape.
There’s no record of the drawing’s origins. The British Library’s website proposes an attribution, but upon scrutiny their case collapses. However, a trail of clues from the sixteenth into the nineteenth centuries offers fresh insights, pointing to an overlooked moment in Newcastle’s history. Can this be the answer?
