The Elder (Sambucus Nigra) is an iconic British tree. A foragers favourite and a source of strange folklore, it’s pithy stems are also a fantastic material for the curious whittler. This full day workshop will explore the use of Elder wood for whittling, from the humble bead to needle pots, spud guns, whistles and much more.
Suitable for beginners and improvers, we will explore a range of carving techniques using just a whittling knife and a few other basic tools. Weather permitting, we will whittle together under the woodland canopy and make a range of items to take away.
Richard Irvine is a regular visitor to RHS Rosemoor, in his capacity as a teacher with the School Visits programme or demonstrating with wood at craft and woodland events. He is a Forest School Association Endorsed Trainer, involved with many local outdoor learning projects, and author of ‘Forest Craft’ - a book all about whittling.
