About the location:
Whirlow is full of flowers in spring and summer, and in the winter the paths and fields will look beautiful with a frost. The felled Rough Standhills plantation above the park has recently been replanted with new broadleaf trees so you’ll be able to see a new native woodland slowly arriving. Still stunningly beautiful, and taking in parts of the Limb Valley, a run through the woodland wonders of Whirlow is always a pleasure.
Where to meet:
Registration point (the first car park inside the Whirlowbrook Park entrance) is at. W3W: https://what3words.com/best.apply.pencil or postcode S11 9QD - about 3 mins walk through the gates and up the drive from the entrance off Ecclesall Road south.
How to get there:
The 81/82 buses from town will get you there, and there are reasonable places to park your bike near the finish line. As always, please run, car share, ride, walk or use public transport if you can as car parking space is tricky and limited on the residential roads nearby. (V. small car parks inside the park, or maybe park on Whirlowdale Road approx 5 minutes walk away).
Terrain/Route:
2 laps, including traditional ups and downs, some tricky tree roots, that fun descent down the Limb Valley Trail and a special opportunity to run through the new Rough Standhills, which is either the Somme or a fascinating glimpse of a new woodland being born, depending on your viewpoint. There are several technical, bumpy and rocky bits, so run at your own speed and don’t hesitate to walk whenever you like! There are likely to be sheep in some of the fields en route, so please be aware of lambs and keep your distance.
Facilities:
The new coffee shop, The Shelter, opens at 9am on Sundays, perfect for a post-race coffee.
