Discover the richness of Māori art practices through the insights of artists Karl Leonard and Ruiha Ruwhiu.
The intricate process of making piupius (a traditional Māori waist garment) for kapa haka performing arts competitive groups involves over 20 or so stages to completion, where a family group will work through most of the processes together.
“Whiria te harakeke!” (Plait the harakeke!) will begin with a video demonstration about piupiu making, followed by a hands-on experience weaving with flax, an evergreen plant native to New Zealand. Participants will get to touch, smell, and work with the natural plant, stripping it down to appropriate sizes for making things such as a tīpare (headband) or a kōmore (hand or ankle bracelet).
This workshop is recommended for participants aged 16 and above. It is held in conjunction with Gallery’s latest Roof Garden Commission GLISTEN by Aotearoa New Zealander artist Lisa Reihana.
