Encounters With the Wild Horses of the GobiIn September, I spent a month in Mongolia’s Gobi Desert researching the world’s only truly wild horse, the takhi. Living and working in this vast, unforgiving landscape offered a rare opportunity to follow wild bands across the steppe, observe their behaviour up close, and learn directly from the rangers, scientists, and herding communities who protect them. This experience opened a window into a world shaped by wind, resilience, and ancient survival strategies, a world where every movement, decision, and connection matters.
This talk weaves together my fieldwork experiences with the deeper story of the takhi: their remarkable history, their ecological importance, and their enduring place within Mongolia’s rich horse culture. Through a blend of research, lived experience, and storytelling, I invite audiences to meet these extraordinary horses, understand the challenges they face, and explore why their future depends on us understanding their lives. It’s a journey into a landscape where culture, science, and the spirit of the horse come together - and an invitation to see wild horses, and perhaps all horses, through a new lens.
