When You Were Me

An exciting new heritage project for LGBTQIA+ 11-19 year olds - When You Were Me will bring together different generations of LGBTQIA+ people based in Newcastle upon Tyne to reflect on the city’s LGBTQIA+ history through film, music, theatre and art. Creating an exciting digital mural and map of our community’s culture.

Launching in March 2024 and running until June 2024, get involved and meet artists, take part in creative workshops, share stories and together, uncover and celebrate the community’s history in your city.

The project has three phases - Sound & Stories; Walking, mapping & talking; and Celebrating LGBTQIA+ history, and will take place in multiple venues and locations in central Newcastle upon Tyne.

When You Were Me is being funded by Historic England’s History in the Making grant programme. This new grant programme has been launched to encourage young people to engage with and celebrate their local heritage.

When You Were Me is also supported by Discovery Museum, Lit and Phil, One Strawberry Lane and Theatre Royal.

For LGBTQIA+ 11-19 year olds. Taking part is free, sign up required.
