About this Event
News is notionally presented as an objective, neutral and independent source of information, providing the public with a diversity of ideas and perspectives about the world. However, some news outlets are doing more than merely reporting about cultural, political, and social issues – they are advocating by taking positions on them. In this presentation, Dr Victoria Fielding will explore various cases of journalists and commentators acting as advocates by participating in public debates. She will describe how news is used as a public relations or strategic communication campaign with the goal of influencing the public’s views. The consequences of such media advocacy will also be explored to explain why audiences are manipulated and democracy undermined when news becomes public relations.
