Director Francois Ozon has a refreshing attitude to old people compared to many of his peers in the film industry; he believes they are real and interesting human beings with rich lives, including in their heads. Michelle lives quietly in the country. It’s autumn, the ideal season for walks in the beautiful Burgundian woods with her neighbour Marie-Claude, foraging for mushrooms for a delicious Burgundian dinner. Both women are vexed by difficult children. Michelle’s plan to resolve the situation with her daughter coincides with an unexpected change in the circumstances of Marie-Claude’s son, ushering a train of events and a revelation of secrets which, like certain mushrooms, have been hiding in plain sight all along.
