In 2017, four Utah poets who knew each other through sundry social circles, including childhood, Utah State Poetry Society (USPS), and writing classes, began to meet biweekly in public libraries to workshop and refine poems in progress, and to improve writing craft in general. In March of 2020, the group moved to Zoom meetings during the Covid shutdown, but returned to public libraries in 2021 for another year.Workshopping the individual poems of the members was a productive and educational experience. The members of the group decided, also, to take it up a level, by incorporating various books about Poetry and Poetry theory into their discussions. Each week the group would read assigned passages, discuss what they'd learned and how it was presented, and talked about ways to incorporate the new theory into their own work.
The group studied: Dark Horses: Poets on Overlooked Poems by Joy Katz and Kevin Prufer (University of Illinois Press), Poets Teaching Poets by Gregory Orr and Susan Bryant Voight (The University of Michigan Press), and Windows and Doors: A Poet Reads literary Theory by Natasha Saje (The University of Michigan Press).
