The press has played a bigger role in our lives over the last year. As new publications form in our City, can we learn from our mistakes?
The role of the press has taken many forms over the last year.
Printed publications continue to struggle and journalists lose their jobs at record paces.
While the industry shrinks, the importance of a free press still remains.
Is there any hope in providing the public with this necessary check of those in power?
How did the pandemic affect our sense of the importance of the press during the pandemic?
How do we cover those in power from a distance?
What does the process of creating a new publication look like?
How can new publications apply the lessons of past mistakes?
Where does the free press go from here?
In the next installment of the "What We Learned" series, Manny's welcomes Annie Gaus of Here/Say Media, Erica Messner of @TheSanFranciscanmagazine, and Nick Bastone of the SF Minute to discuss what they have learned over the last 15 months and how they apply the lessons learned to their industry.
The structure of this event will be about 45 minutes of discussion with our panel followed by small break out groups where YOU can meet some new folks and discuss what you just heard. We hope to help solicit a more collaborative discussion and hear the diverse stories in our city.
Manny's never turns away anyone for lack of funds. To receive a complementary ticket just email the word "grapefruit" and the title of this event to [email protected].
This event will be in person at Manny's but there will also be a Zoom link ticket for those who'd like to tune in digitally from the comfort of their home.
About Here/Say Media:
Our mission is to help our friends and neighbors understand San Francisco through deeply-reported articles, analysis, video and audio. We’re not here to break the news—we’re here to offer clarity, focus and context. We want to help you learn why things are happening, how they came to be and who made them that way. Through our reporting we hope to empower you with the information you need to hold yourself, your neighbors and your city accountable to change.
About the San Franciscan & Erica Messner:
The San Franciscan is a fiercely independent magazine that celebrates the diverse subcultures of San Francisco and the Bay Area through humor and criticism, but always with utmost sincerity and pride.
Erica Messner (she/her) is cofounder and editor in chief of The San Franciscan. On a sunny day, when she’s not writing, you can find her climbing stairways and taking pictures of Sutro Tower. She lives on a hill in the City by the Bay.
About the SF Minute:
The SF Minute is focused on finding the top news stories from around the city and bringing them to you in a quick, easy-to-read newsletter every Monday through Friday.
